Best QuillBot Alternatives in 2027

Rephrase AI is the QuillBot alternative to open first when a short draft needs a paraphrase and the free pass has to hold more than a short block of text. The public paraphrasing tool and the public AI rephraser each take up to 1,200 characters. Both are free to try without an account. Both offer Clearer, Professional, and Shorter.

People look for a QuillBot alternative because the free paraphraser stops at 100 words and most modes are paid. A general list of paraphrasers is in best paraphrasing tools. Use that list when you are choosing a paraphraser from scratch. Use this comparison when you already use QuillBot and you want a different tool.

A no-account paraphrase of a short draft ranks first. Wordtune offers more free rewrite volume, at 10 rewrites a day against 3 signed-in rephrases a month, and Wordtune is still second because that no-account pass comes first.

The order is Rephrase AI, Wordtune, ProWritingAid, LanguageTool, Grammarly, and Hemingway Editor.

How we ranked these alternatives

The criteria, in order, were these.

  1. A free paraphrase with a stated limit. Can the tool rewrite existing text before you pay, and is the free stop a stated number?
  2. How much text one free pass accepts. A cap that can hold a short draft ranks above a one-sentence cap.
  3. Named controls for tone or length. Can you ask for a clearer, shorter, or more formal version by name?
  4. What you pay next. Once the free cap is too small, what is the published paid price?
  5. Checking as a separate job. Finding mistakes can be the better purchase. It does not take the top rank on a paraphrase list.

We compared each tool using current official product pages and documentation, focusing on workflow, access, pricing, and everyday usefulness. Paid, login-only, and technical requirements are noted where they affect our recommendation.

Plan prices below are as of October 30, 2026.

What QuillBot's free paraphraser includes

QuillBot homepage on desktop

QuillBot homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

The free-versus-Premium article, updated October 22, 2026, is the limit that sends people looking. Unpaid paraphrases are confined to Standard and to Fluency, and either mode ends at a hundred words. Paying removes that word cap and opens the other modes. A synonym slider works partly before you pay and fully after. History on Premium holds 50 paraphrases each month. Custom modes on Premium are unlimited.

The modes article, updated the same day, names 10 modes. Standard and Fluency are free, with limited usage. Humanizer, Formal, Academic, Simple, Creative, Expand, Shorten, and Custom are Premium. Limited daily paraphrases are available.

Creative may slightly change the meaning. Humanizer is a Premium mode that makes text sound less robotic. None of these tools is a way to hide that a draft was written with AI.

QuillBot's pricing FAQ gives these rates. The month-to-month rate is $19.95. Annual comes out to $8.33 a month because a year is billed as $99.95. A third rate, called semi-annual, is $13.31 a month and is also described as a $39.95 bill every three months. Grammar checking and paraphrasing are both free with limited access. The citation generator, the AI detector, and translation are free.

Standard and Fluency are the modes you can use before you pay, and they stop at 100 words. Formal, Academic, Simple, Shorten, and Expand are Premium.

1. Rephrase AI

Rephrase AI homepage on desktop

Rephrase AI homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Rephrase AI is first because a short draft can be paraphrased with no account, and the character cap is 1,200.

Each public tool stops at 1,200 characters, which is the room past QuillBot's 100-word free block for a short email or a paragraph. Clearer, Professional, and Shorter are the styles on both public tools. Those public tools are free to try without an account, each with its own input limit, apart from the signed-in monthly allowance.

Signed-in Free is 3 standard rephrases a month. Each of those can run to 3,000 characters. Pro costs $29/month, with the yearly plan at $17.42/month. Billed $209 annually. On Pro the monthly rephrase cap goes away, the per-rephrase limit rises to 10,000 characters, and SuperRephrase™ Mode is included. Four profiles sit in the signed-in editor, Professional, Creative, Academic, and Casual, and the editor opens before any of them is chosen. Formality, complexity, brevity, and creativity move after you choose one.

New customers get a 7-day free trial. Then $29 per month. When the short-draft path is the one you want, Start 7-day trial.

Against the 100-word wall, the public tools are the reason to switch. You get a named style on a short draft before an account exists. You do not get QuillBot's longer mode list, and Rephrase AI is not a grammar checker. Three signed-in rephrases a month is tight once 1,200 characters is too short.

Switch when the wording or the tone is the problem, the draft fits 1,200 characters, and you will compare the paraphrase with the original. Keep a grammar checker when the next job is finding mistakes.

A dated side-by-side is in Rephrase AI vs QuillBot.

2. Wordtune

Wordtune homepage on desktop

Wordtune homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Wordtune is the account-first rewriter to set beside QuillBot when a hundred-word block is the reason you are looking. On the plans page, Basic is the free card. Its rewrite budget is ten a day, and those rewrites include AI suggestions. Summaries are a separate monthly count of three. Spelling fixes and grammar fixes are unlimited.

Annual prices on the same page are $6.99 a month for Advanced and $9.99 a month for Unlimited. Advanced raises the daily rewrite count to 30 and the monthly summary count to 15, and it adds unlimited AI recommendations. Unlimited removes the rewrite cap and the summary cap. Choosing the monthly view changes those two paid prices to $13.99 and $19.99.

Trials on the paid cards last three days. You supply a payment method, the charge waits until the trial is over, and refunds are not part of the offer. Cancel before the next cycle, or before those three days end, to avoid the charge. Support can apply 30% off for a valid .edu address used by a student, an educator, or a nonprofit.

The rewrite starts with an account. After that you paste, highlight, and choose a suggestion. The named controls are formal, casual, Shorten, and Expand. A paragraph counts as a valid unit, which is the useful contrast with QuillBot's free block. Wordtune works on desktop, on mobile, in a browser, and in Google Docs.

The account is the price of the larger free volume.

Pick Wordtune if a daily batch of about ten rewrites, plus spelling and grammar checks, is worth creating an account before the first pass.

Wordtune vs QuillBot compares the rewrite controls and the free limits in more detail.

3. ProWritingAid

ProWritingAid homepage on desktop

ProWritingAid homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

ProWritingAid belongs on this list when the QuillBot passage is short but the real document is a manuscript. The pricing page gives Free ten sentence rephrases each day. The style menu on those rephrases covers formal, informal, longer, shorter, fluent, and sensory. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation sit on the same free plan, along with two daily runs of each line-editing report. Free suggestions cover a 500-word slice. Paid licenses are described as able to handle any document length. The language list is English only, with General, British, US, Australian, and Canadian varieties. One person may install it on more than one computer.

If you pay month to month, Premium is $30 and Premium Pro is $36. If you pay yearly, Premium is $10 a month because the year is billed at $120, and Premium Pro is $12 a month because the year is billed at $144. Yearly purchases mention a three-day money-back window. Lifetime purchases use that same three-day window. Monthly purchases are not refundable.

The rephrase feature works on one sentence, with those style names. A free account gets 10 rephrases a day and a paid plan gets unlimited rephrases.

You trade QuillBot's mode list for a counted daily sentence pass and a stack of reports. A paragraph takes several passes. Five hundred words is the free suggestion wall. Thirty dollars a month is a lot if the reports go unused.

Use it for an English manuscript whose reports you will actually open. Use Rephrase AI for one pass on a short draft that should not require a manuscript editor.

4. LanguageTool

LanguageTool homepage on desktop

LanguageTool homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

LanguageTool is the multilingual checker for a reader who only borrowed QuillBot to fix a sentence. Its premium comparison caps a free text field at 2,000 characters and caps free AI sentence rephrases at three per day. Premium lifts the field to 150,000 characters and removes the cap on sentence paraphrases, which can shift a sentence toward formal, fluid, or short. More than 30 languages are included. Browsers and Word and LibreOffice can run the checker before you create an account.

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Thunderbird have add-ons. Windows, macOS, and iOS have apps. Premium has no free trial. The substitute is 14 days to cancel and receive a refund.

The subscription article from March 24, 2026 prices individual Premium at €19.90 a month, €39.90 a quarter, €59.89 a year, and €99.90 for two years. Prices include VAT.

That character cap is why it can sit next to a paraphraser without replacing one. Three sentence rephrases a day is a sample, not a habit. The extra 20,000-plus checks for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, and Portuguese are a Premium set.

Take LanguageTool when several languages need a grammar pass and a rewrite is rare. For a tone pass on a short draft, Rephrase AI is the closer fit.

5. Grammarly

Grammarly homepage on desktop

Grammarly homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Grammarly is the checker-plus-paid-rewrite option when QuillBot's unpaid modes feel too narrow. The plans page prices Free at $0 a month. Free includes mistake-free writing, a tone view, and 100 AI prompts a month.

Pro includes full-sentence rewrites, tone changes, fluent English, unlimited personalized suggestions, plagiarism detection, AI-text detection, and 2,000 AI prompts. Pro comes with $12 crossed out, Try for free, nothing due today, and a reminder email two days before the trial ends.

The paraphraser opens before any sign-up, and a free account is required before you get rewrites. Six unnamed preset styles come with that account. English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian need it as well. Full-sentence rewrites are a Pro feature.

Pay for Grammarly if the checker is the main job and a full-sentence rewrite can wait for a paid plan. If the free limit has to be a number you can read first, Rephrase AI or Wordtune is the clearer comparison.

If the job is leaving Grammarly rather than leaving QuillBot, start with Grammarly alternatives. QuillBot vs Grammarly compares the paraphraser with the grammar checker.

6. Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor homepage on desktop

Hemingway Editor homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Hemingway Editor is the marker, not the paraphraser, for a reader who wants to see wordiness before any tool rewrites it. The billing FAQ gives the free editor a readability score and highlights for wordy lines, passive voice, and words that have a simpler option. Plus is the paid layer that can repair those lines, shift style and tone, and add a stronger grammar check.

Credits are counted by sentence. Rewriting four sentences at once spends four credits. Grammar repairs are outside that credit pool. The trial runs two weeks and stays free unless you select a paid plan and add a payment method.

The annual plan starts at $100 for the year, or $8.33 a month, with a separate monthly plan at $10. The Plus plan table splits the annual cards into Individual 5K, at $8.33 a month and $100 a year for 5,000 AI sentences, and Individual 10K, at $12.50 a month and $150 a year for 10,000 AI sentences. Eight styles can be applied. Examples include shorten, add detail, confident, friendly, casual, formal, and persuasive.

QuillBot writes a new version. This free editor only marks the old one. Plus will propose a fix and meter it.

Mark the draft on the free editor if you will revise it yourself. Move to Plus for proposed fixes. Move to Rephrase AI if the paraphrase itself is the point and a readability product is not.

Scribbr runs on QuillBot's paraphraser

Scribbr homepage on desktop

Scribbr homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Scribbr's paraphrasing tool is powered by QuillBot, and Scribbr and QuillBot are both Learneo services. Standard and Fluency are included. The cap is 125 words per input, and the tool is free without sign-up. Scribbr also offers a free Chrome extension.

QuillBot's free cap is 100 words. Scribbr's cap is 125 words. Scribbr is the same paraphraser under another name, so it is not ranked as a separate QuillBot competitor.

Scribbr offers 125 words and a free tool with no sign-up. The tool is powered by QuillBot, so Scribbr is not an extra free engine.

Websites and apps like QuillBot

The tools above are websites. Some also ship apps.

Rephrase AI's public tools and signed-in editor are websites. Wordtune works on desktop, on mobile, in a browser, and in Google Docs. LanguageTool includes add-ons plus Windows, macOS, and iOS apps, and it also runs in Word and LibreOffice. One person can install ProWritingAid on several computers. Hemingway's free tier is the website editor. QuillBot's paraphraser runs in the browser. Scribbr offers a free Chrome extension.

Grammarly offers the Go assistant through the Chrome and Edge extensions.

Apps like QuillBot and websites like QuillBot point at the same products. Pick the job, then the platform, if you need a particular browser or a phone app.

A general chatbot is a different alternative. QuillBot vs ChatGPT covers that choice. This list stays with writing tools that include a paraphraser, a rewriter, or a grammar checker with a rewrite control.

How to choose

Decide the job, then how much free text you get, then the price.

Rephrase AI fits when the change is wording or tone, the draft fits the public cap, and you will read the result. No account is required on the public tool. The signed-in free allowance is three a month. Pro is the step after that allowance is too small.

Wordtune fits a daily set of about ten rewrites plus free spelling and grammar checks. ProWritingAid fits one sentence inside a longer English manuscript. LanguageTool fits grammar across languages when rewriting is rare. Grammarly fits a reader who will pay for full-sentence rewrites. Hemingway's free editor fits a reader who will mark wordiness and passive voice and then edit by hand.

Leave Scribbr off the shortlist when you wanted a different paraphraser. Scribbr runs on QuillBot.

Check the output yourself. A paraphrase can lose a name, a date, or a hedge. A checker can miss a false statement that is spelled correctly. For school or work, keep the source beside the draft.
