Best ProWritingAid Alternatives in 2027

Rephrase AI is the ProWritingAid alternative to open first when the draft already says what you mean and you want the wording or the tone changed. The public paragraph rephraser takes up to 1,200 characters in Clearer, Professional, or Shorter. Those public writing tools are on the site, and you can try them for free without an account.

Rephrase AI changes wording and tone. It is not a full grammar checker, and it does not produce the style reports ProWritingAid runs on a manuscript. If the next job is a style report, a grammar pass, or a readability highlight, a later tool on this list fits that job better.

People look for alternatives to ProWritingAid when the free plan stops at 500 words, when a paid license costs more than a rewrite is worth, or when the report suite is more tool than the draft needs. A named rewrite and a simpler path rank first here. A checker can still be the better buy, and the list says so when the draft needs mistakes found or a report. The wider paraphraser list is best paraphrasing tools. Use that list when you are choosing a paraphraser from scratch. Use this comparison when you already use ProWritingAid.

The order is Rephrase AI, Wordtune, QuillBot, Scribbr, LanguageTool, Hemingway Editor, and Grammarly.

How we ranked these alternatives

Five questions set the ranks.

  1. A rewrite of text you already have. The tool should rewrite, rephrase, or change the tone of an existing draft, and you should be able to name the change. A manuscript report suite does not win this question.
  2. A simpler path than a report suite. Fewer steps to a new version rank above a product that starts with dozens of reports.
  3. What you can try before paying, with the stop written down. A stated free limit beats a trial whose later price is not listed. No account matters when that free room holds the draft. A sign-up can still rank higher when the free rewrite count covers a working day and the no-account tool stops at a short word cap.
  4. What the paid plan costs. What you pay when the free limit is too small, set next to ProWritingAid Premium at $30 a month or $120 for the year.
  5. Style and grammar reports stay their own job. A checker or a readability editor can still be the right buy. Those features do not take the first rank when the reader wants something cheaper, simpler, or focused on rewriting. The section for each tool says when to keep the reports.

We compared each tool using current official product pages and documentation, focusing on workflow, access, pricing, and everyday usefulness. Paid, login-only, and technical requirements are noted where they affect our recommendation.

Prices and plans here are as of October 31, 2026.

Rephrase AI takes the top spot because the styles are named, the public paragraph tool skips the account, and the product is the rewrite rather than a report beside a rewrite. That rank is not a claim that the yearly bill is the lowest. Wordtune is next because ten rewrites a day, including a paragraph, sit beside unlimited free spelling and grammar checks. QuillBot follows because the unpaid modes have names and the free path still ends at 100 words. Scribbr is the same paraphraser with a 125-word cap and no sign-up, so Scribbr does not outrank QuillBot's paid modes or Wordtune's daily count.

LanguageTool, Hemingway Editor, and Grammarly are the tools to open when you still want a check or a highlight. They sit lower because this list puts the rewrite first, not because a report is useless.

What ProWritingAid includes

ProWritingAid homepage on desktop

ProWritingAid homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

ProWritingAid is a grammar checker, a set of writing reports, and a sentence rephrase tool aimed at people drafting a story. The pricing page includes, on Free, 10 rephrases a day, grammar and spelling and punctuation checks, and 2 runs of each line-editing report a day on up to 500 words. A free account receives suggestions for 500 words at a time. A paid license can run on documents of any length. ProWritingAid runs in English only. The varieties are General, British, US, Australian, and Canadian.

Premium costs $30 for a month, or $120 for the year, which the yearly card shows as $10 a month. Premium Pro costs $36 for a month, or $144 for the year, shown as $12 a month on the yearly card. Lifetime Premium is $399 once. Lifetime Premium Pro is $699 once. The yearly cards show a 3-day money-back guarantee, and the page says yearly billing saves 67% compared with monthly. A refund on a yearly or lifetime plan has to be requested within three days of the purchase. Canceling the subscription does not by itself create that refund. A monthly plan is not refundable. Story Credit purchases are nonrefundable, except unused credits bought with a new subscription that you cancel under the three-day guarantee.

Premium adds unlimited rephrases and unlimited line-editing report runs, plus 25 or more writing analysis reports. The named reports include readability, sentence structure, overused words, repeats, sentence length, and sensory detail. Premium includes 1 chapter critique a day. Premium Pro includes 30 chapter critiques a day. Manuscript Analysis, Virtual Beta Reader, Character Analysis, Plot Analysis, and Marketability Analysis use Story Credits, which are an extra purchase. Free users can buy those credits. Premium and Premium Pro discount them. A plagiarism check is an additional cost on every column of the plan table.

A license is for one person. That person can install ProWritingAid on several computers. Someone else on a shared computer needs a separate license. University and college students can get 25% off yearly plans with a verified Student Beans account. The page also says K-12 educational organizations can use premium features for free.

The rephrase page works on a sentence. The directions are more formal, more informal, longer, shorter, more fluent, and more sensory. The page says the feature is not a content generator. The feature rewords a sentence and is meant to keep the meaning. A free account gets 10 rephrases a day. A paid license removes that cap. The public page is a demo. The demo does not recognize a Premium or Premium Pro license, and the demo limits how many times you can use the tool there. Paid use belongs in the Web Editor or an integration. The same page shows Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, and Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

The report suite is the reason many writers stay. The free stop at 500 words, the sentence-sized rephrase, and Premium at $30 a month are the reasons they look for something else.

A ProWritingAid alternative

A ProWritingAid alternative, in the singular, is the tool you open for the job you actually have.

Open Rephrase AI when the sentence is already understandable and the wording or the tone is the problem, and you can try it for free with no account. Do not use Rephrase AI for a style report, a grammar flag, or a full chapter in one pass. Those jobs are later on this list. LanguageTool is the checker with a free character limit you can read. Hemingway Editor marks wordy and passive sentences before you pay. Grammarly keeps full-sentence rewrites on Pro.

The ranked sections below apply the same five questions to every tool, including Rephrase AI.

1. Rephrase AI

Rephrase AI homepage on desktop

Rephrase AI homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Rephrase AI is first because the product is the rewrite and the tone change, and the public path does not ask for an account.

The public paragraph rephraser takes up to 1,200 characters in Clearer, Professional, or Shorter. The pricing page covers those public writing tools, and you can try them for free without an account. Each tool has its own input limit. The public tools stand apart from the monthly allowance after you sign in.

Once you sign in, Free allows 3 standard rephrases a month, and each one can run to 3,000 characters. Pro costs $29/month month to month. The yearly plan is $17.42/month, and the bill line reads Billed $209 annually. Pro includes unlimited rephrases per month, up to 10,000 characters per rephrase, and SuperRephrase™ Mode. The signed-in editor offers Professional, Creative, Academic, and Casual. The editor opens on Custom, so none of those four is selected. Choosing a profile lets formality, complexity, brevity, and creativity move.

New customers get a 7-day free trial. Then $29 per month. When that plan matches the draft, Start 7-day trial.

The yearly bill is higher than ProWritingAid Premium at $120 for the year. Month to month, the Pro label sits next to ProWritingAid Premium at $30 a month. The first rank is the rewrite, not the lowest yearly price.

On text you already have. Clearer, Professional, or Shorter on a paragraph, before an account. Four profiles after you sign in.

Free ceiling. 1,200 characters on the public paragraph tool. Three signed-in rephrases a month after that, unless you move to Pro.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if you need grammar flags, line-editing reports, or a manuscript critique. Rephrase AI does not flag spelling, punctuation, or grammar, and Rephrase AI does not run a style report. Three signed-in rephrases a month is a small allowance once a draft is longer than the public character limit. A long chapter does not fit one public pass.

Set the rewrite beside the original before you send the draft. A rewrite can lose a name, a date, or a hedge you meant to keep.

2. Wordtune

Wordtune homepage on desktop

Wordtune homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Wordtune is where to go when the ProWritingAid reports are more than the draft needs and you still want a few rewrites beside a grammar check. The plans page lists Basic at $0. That plan allows 10 rewrites and AI suggestions a day, 3 AI summarizations a month, and spelling corrections and grammar checks with no stated cap.

The regular annual price for Advanced is $6.99 a month. Wordtune sometimes runs a sale, and a lower figure on the card does not replace that regular price. At the regular price, Advanced allows 30 rewrites and AI suggestions a day, 15 AI summarizations a month, and unlimited AI recommendations, spelling corrections, and grammar checks. Unlimited is $9.99 a month when the year is billed annually. That plan removes the caps on rewrites and summarizations, and spelling checks and grammar checks stay unlimited. Switching the page to monthly shows $13.99 for Advanced and $19.99 for Unlimited. The Unlimited card shows a 50% mark beside the annual price.

Paid plans start with a trial of 3 days. Payment information is required, and Wordtune does not charge until the trial ends. Canceling before the trial ends avoids the charge. Support can take 30% off annual and monthly plans for a student or an educator with a valid .edu address who is enrolled or working at an academic institution, or for someone at a non-profit. The plans page also names a Chrome extension, an Edge extension, and Wordtune for iOS.

The rewrite page says you can start without a credit card. The first step is still an account. After that you paste text, highlight a passage, and choose a suggestion. The controls are formal and casual, along with Shorten and Expand. The page says a paragraph can be the target, not only a sentence. Wordtune runs on a desktop, on a phone, and inside Google Docs.

On text you already have. A formal, casual, shorter, or longer version of a sentence or a paragraph, after you create an account.

Free ceiling. Ten rewrites a day, with spelling and grammar checks that do not state a cap. Summaries stop at 3 a month.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if the named writing reports are the reason you opened the draft. Wordtune does not offer that report list. Ten free rewrites a day is the stop if you rewrite often. Unlimited at $9.99 a month on the annual plan sits next to ProWritingAid Premium at $10 a month on the yearly plan, so the switch is the rewrite plus the grammar checks.

Leave ProWritingAid for Wordtune when a handful of sentence or paragraph rewrites a day, plus spelling and grammar checks, is the job, and the manuscript reports are not.

3. QuillBot

QuillBot homepage on desktop

QuillBot homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

QuillBot is the paraphraser to open when you left ProWritingAid for new wording on a short passage, not for another report. The paraphraser help article, updated October 22, 2026, keeps unpaid use to 100 words and to the Standard and Fluency modes. Premium lifts the word cap and opens all 9 modes. Free accounts get part of the synonym slider. Premium opens the full slider, can store up to 50 paraphrases a month in history, and lets you build custom modes.

QuillBot's pricing FAQ gives three prices. A month is $19.95. A plan billed every 3 months is $39.95, which the FAQ shows as $13.31 a month. A year is $99.95, shown as $8.33 a month. The FAQ describes the citation generator and the translator as free. It describes the grammar checker and the paraphraser as free with limited access. The FAQ does not list a separate grammar-checker ceiling.

On text you already have. A Standard or Fluency paraphrase under 100 words. The other modes after you pay.

Free ceiling. 100 words and two modes. A longer passage does not fit one unpaid pass.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if the next job is a report on a chapter. QuillBot's year is $99.95, under ProWritingAid Premium at $120, and the monthly price is $19.95, under Premium at $30. The 100-word cap is still why a long draft does not start here. The synonym slider is only partly open before you pay.

Leave ProWritingAid for QuillBot when the passage is under 100 words, or when you will pay for the other modes. A wider look at leaving QuillBot is in QuillBot alternatives.

4. Scribbr

Scribbr homepage on desktop

Scribbr homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Scribbr's paraphrasing tool is powered by QuillBot, and Scribbr and QuillBot are both Learneo services. Standard and Fluency are the two modes. The cap is 125 words per input. The page says you do not have to sign up, and the page describes the tool as free. The same page offers a free Chrome extension. Fluency, on that page, improves language and corrects grammatical mistakes. Standard is described as a compromise between changing the wording and keeping the meaning.

QuillBot's free cap is 100 words. Scribbr's ceiling is 125 words, and the Scribbr page does not ask for an account. Scribbr does not add the other QuillBot modes. Scribbr is the same paraphraser under another name, with a slightly larger free slice and a shorter start.

On text you already have. Standard or Fluency on up to 125 words, with no sign-up.

Free ceiling. 125 words a pass. The page says you can use the tool as often as you like. Each input still stops at 125 words.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if you need a report on a manuscript. Stay with QuillBot's own Premium if you need the modes past Standard and Fluency. Use Rephrase AI when 125 words is too short and you want a named style on a longer paragraph with no account.

5. LanguageTool

LanguageTool homepage on desktop

LanguageTool homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

LanguageTool is the checker to open when you are leaving ProWritingAid to fix mistakes, and a long rewrite is not the job. On the premium comparison, the free side allows 2,000 characters in a text field and 3 AI sentence rephrases a day. Premium moves the character limit to 150,000 and adds unlimited sentence paraphrasing that can aim for a more formal line, a more fluid line, or a shorter line. Premium also adds more than 20,000 extra checks for English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, and Portuguese. LanguageTool is offered in 30 or more languages. VAT is included in every price on that page.

The checker can run with no user account in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Word, and LibreOffice. Opera and Thunderbird are extra add-ons. The editor apps for Windows, macOS, and iOS ask for a free account. Premium is not sold there as a free trial. What the page offers instead is a 14-day money-back guarantee, and a canceled purchase can be refunded.

The euro prices are on the subscription article, dated March 24, 2026. Individual Premium is €19.90 a month, €39.90 a quarter at €13.30 a month, €59.89 a year at €4.90 a month, or €99.90 for two years at €4.16 a month. Students, teachers, and professors can take up to 20% off Premium if they qualify.

On text you already have. A grammar pass in more than one language, and 3 sentence rephrases a day before you pay. Premium names formal, fluid, and shorter.

Free ceiling. 2,000 characters, and 3 sentence rephrases a day. That count will not carry a daily rewriting habit.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if you want the English manuscript reports, the sensory report, or the chapter critique. LanguageTool's year is €59.89. That figure is in euros, and the premium page says VAT is included. When the job is a full tone pass on a paragraph, stay with Rephrase AI.

Leave ProWritingAid for LanguageTool when you want a grammar checker with a free limit you can read, and a rewritten sentence is only occasional.

6. Hemingway Editor

Hemingway Editor homepage on desktop

Hemingway Editor homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

The free Hemingway Editor is a highlighter for readers who left ProWritingAid to see wordiness, not to accept a rewrite. The billing FAQ says the free editor scores readability and marks wordy sentences, passive voice, and words with a simpler alternative. Editor Plus is the paid layer. Plus can fix wordy sentences with AI, change style and tone, and run an advanced grammar checker. Until you pay, the editor marks the problem and leaves the sentence to you.

Rewriting one sentence spends one AI credit. Rewriting a paragraph of four sentences at once spends four credits. Grammar fixes do not spend those credits. The FAQ calls grammar fixes unlimited unless the use is bot spam. A trial lasts two weeks and ends with no charge. A charge starts only after you pick a paid plan and enter payment information.

The FAQ starts the annual plan at $100 a year and breaks that annual price into $8.33 a month, 17% under the monthly plan. Hemingway's monthly plan costs $10. The Editor Plus plan table lists Individual 5K at $8.33 a month with $100 billed for the year and 5,000 AI sentences a month. Individual 10K is $12.50 a month with $150 billed for the year and 10,000 AI sentences a month. The annual toggle is labeled save $200. The Plus page also says the trial can start without a credit card. Plus lets you apply one of eight styles. The page's examples are shorten, add detail, more confident, more friendly, more casual, more formal, and more persuasive.

On text you already have. Highlights on the free editor. A proposed rewrite on Plus, at one credit a sentence.

Free ceiling. No AI rewrite until you pay. A long chapter spends a credit for every sentence.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if you want the named line-editing reports on a full draft. The Hemingway year starts at $100, under ProWritingAid Premium at $120, and the monthly plan is $10, under Premium at $30. The free editor still leaves the rewrite to you.

Leave ProWritingAid for the free Hemingway Editor when you want wordy or passive sentences marked and you will revise them yourself. Move to Plus when you also want a proposed fix. Move to Rephrase AI when you want the rewrite and you do not need a readability editor. Hemingway Editor vs Grammarly compares the highlighter with a grammar editor.

7. Grammarly

Grammarly homepage on desktop

Grammarly homepage, captured October 30, 2026.

Grammarly is a checker, which is why it sits last when the reader left ProWritingAid for a rewrite. Grammarly's plans price Free at $0 a month. Free covers writing without mistakes, a look at your writing tone, and 100 AI prompts a month.

Pro adds full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustments, fluent English, unlimited personalized suggestions, and 2,000 AI prompts. The Pro list also includes detecting plagiarism and AI generated text. The Pro card shows $12 with a strikethrough, Try for free, $0 due today, and an email two days before the trial ends. The card does not list the charge after the trial. Enterprise is contact sales.

Grammarly's paraphraser uses a title that says no sign-up. Rewrites and six preset styles come with a free Grammarly account. Those six languages, English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian, require the free account too. The plans page still puts full-sentence rewrites on Pro, and not on Free.

On text you already have. A checker and a tone view before you pay. A full-sentence rewrite on Pro.

Free ceiling. 100 AI prompts a month. Full-sentence rewrites sit outside that free list.

Stay with ProWritingAid instead if you want the manuscript reports and a yearly price you can read. Grammarly's public Pro offer is a trial, so you cannot set it next to ProWritingAid's $120 year. Use LanguageTool when the free character cap has to be on the page. Use Rephrase AI or Wordtune when the rewrite limit has to be readable before a trial.

ProWritingAid vs Grammarly covers reports, rephrasing, and price in more detail. If the question is leaving Grammarly, start at Grammarly alternatives.

Free ProWritingAid alternatives

A free ProWritingAid alternative helps when the unpaid tier can finish the job in front of you. The rows below are those free stops.

ToolFree path on text you already haveWhere the free path stops
Rephrase AIPublic paragraph rephraser with no account, up to 1,200 characters, in Clearer, Professional, or Shorter. After sign-in, Free adds 3 standard rephrases a month, each up to 3,000 characters. No grammar check and no style report. The signed-in free plan ends at 3 a month.
Wordtune10 rewrites each day, 3 summaries a month, and spelling and grammar checks with no stated cap.The daily rewrite count, and an account before the first rewrite.
QuillBotStandard and Fluency on a passage of up to 100 words. The 100-word stop, and every mode other than those two.
ScribbrStandard and Fluency on up to 125 words, and no sign-up. The tool runs on QuillBot.Each pass stops at 125 words, and the modes stay at Standard and Fluency.
LanguageToolA grammar check up to 2,000 characters, and 3 sentence rephrases a day.The character ceiling, and almost every paraphrase beyond those 3 sentences.
Hemingway EditorReadability scoring and highlights for wordy lines, passive voice, and simpler words. The free editor leaves the sentence for you to revise.
GrammarlyWriting without mistakes, a tone view, and 100 AI prompts each month.A full-sentence rewrite requires Pro.
ProWritingAid10 rephrases a day, and two report runs a day, each on 500 words. The 500-word window, and a rephrase that stays on one sentence.

When the job is a grammar checker and you want to skip payment, LanguageTool is the free plan with a ceiling you can read. When the job is a rewrite and you want to skip an account, start with the Rephrase AI paragraph tool, and you can try it for free with no account. When you want a few rewrites plus grammar checks, Wordtune's free plan states both numbers. When a paraphrase under 125 words is enough and an account is the step you want to skip, Scribbr is the QuillBot path with the larger free slice. ProWritingAid's own free plan is still the one with the reports, inside 500 words.

Alternatives to ProWritingAid

Leaving ProWritingAid is not one purchase. The right replacement follows the job you still have.

A paragraph you already wrote, when the change is wording or tone, points to Rephrase AI. Add Wordtune if you also want free grammar checks and you will create an account. A short paraphrase points to QuillBot, or to Scribbr when 125 words and no account are enough and you accept QuillBot's engine. A grammar pass across more than one language points to LanguageTool. Wordiness and passive voice, before any rewrite, point to the free Hemingway Editor. A familiar checker, with full-sentence rewrites held for a paid trial, points to Grammarly.

The lowest bill is a different question. ProWritingAid Premium is $30 for a month, or $120 for the year, shown as $10 a month. Rephrase AI's yearly bill sits above that $120, so Rephrase AI is the rewrite, not the low yearly swap. Wordtune Unlimited is $9.99 a month on the annual plan. Advanced has a regular annual price of $6.99 a month, and Wordtune sometimes runs a sale on that annual price. QuillBot is $99.95 for the year. The Hemingway Editor year starts at $100. Those yearly figures sit under ProWritingAid Premium's $120. LanguageTool's year is €59.89, in euros, and the premium page includes VAT in that price. Grammarly's card does not list the charge after the trial, so the public page cannot place Grammarly under or over $120.

A simpler path is its own reason to switch. The public Rephrase AI paragraph tool is one paste and one named style. The free Hemingway editor highlights problems and does not rewrite them. ProWritingAid's value is the report list. If those reports stay closed, the Premium bill is paying for a suite the draft does not use.

Sites and apps like ProWritingAid

Someone searching for a site like ProWritingAid, or an app like ProWritingAid, is usually looking for one of these same tools in a browser or an installed app. Every product here has a website. Several also ship an extension or a desktop or phone app.

ProWritingAid's rephrase page shows Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Scrivener, and Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. One person can install the license on several computers. Wordtune runs on a desktop, on a phone, and in Google Docs, and the plans page names Chrome, Edge, and iOS. LanguageTool adds browser add-ons plus Windows, macOS, and iOS apps, and the checker also runs in Word and LibreOffice with no account. The free Hemingway Editor is the highlighter on the Hemingway site. QuillBot's paraphraser is a website. Scribbr also offers a Chrome extension at no charge. Rephrase AI's public paragraph tool and the signed-in editor are websites.

Choose the rewrite or the report first. Read the free limit before you install an app for one browser or a phone.

How to choose

Start with the job, then the free stop, then the bill.

Rephrase AI fits when the wording or the tone is what you want changed, and you will read the result. You can try it for free with no account on the public paragraph tool. Signed-in Free is 3 rephrases a month. Pro is the plan when that monthly count is too small, and the yearly bill is the figure to set beside $120 before you call Rephrase AI the cheaper plan.

Wordtune fits about 10 rewrites a day plus spelling and grammar checks that do not state a cap. QuillBot fits a passage under 100 words, and the other modes if you pay. Scribbr fits those two free modes up to 125 words when you do not want an account. LanguageTool fits when the draft needs grammar fixes in more than one language and a rewrite is uncommon. The free Hemingway Editor fits a writer who wants wordy and passive lines marked and will revise them by hand. Grammarly fits the free checker when a Pro trial is acceptable for full-sentence rewrites. Stay with ProWritingAid when you will use the reports on a long English document and the $120 year is the bill you meant to pay.

Check the new wording against the draft. A name, a date, or a hedge can fall out of a rewrite. A checker can leave a wrong fact alone when the spelling is fine. A style report can flag a sentence you meant to keep. For a class or a job, keep the source and the citation beside the paragraph.

FAQ

Try a rewrite on the wording you already have

Rephrase AI is the right first stop when the reports are more than this draft needs and the sentence still sounds wrong. Paste the paragraph, set the rewrite next to the original, and keep the version that still says what you meant.
