How to Write a Check: A Step-by-Step Guide

Writing a check may seem old-fashioned in today's digital world, but it remains an essential financial skill. Whether you're paying rent, making a donation, or handling business transactions, knowing how to properly fill out a check ensures your payments are processed correctly and securely.

1. Fill Out the Date

Start by writing the current date on the line in the upper right corner. Use the full month name (e.g., June 10, 2025) to avoid confusion. This date indicates when the check becomes valid for cashing or depositing.

2. Write the Recipient's Name

On the line that says "Pay to the order of," write the name of the person or company you're paying. Be precise - if paying a company, use its official name as it appears on their bank account.

3. Enter the Payment Amount in Numbers

In the small box to the right, write the payment amount in numbers (e.g., 125.50). Start writing right next to the dollar sign to prevent anyone from adding extra digits.

4. Write the Payment Amount in Words

On the line below, write out the same amount in words. For example, "One hundred twenty-five and 50/100." If there are cents, write them as a fraction over 100. Draw a line to fill any remaining space to prevent alterations.

5. Complete the Memo Line (Optional)

The memo line in the bottom left corner is for your reference. You might note what the payment is for (e.g., "June rent") or include an account number.

6. Sign the Check

Finally, sign your name exactly as it appears on your bank account in the bottom right corner. Without your signature, the check is invalid.

Common Mistakes That Could Cost You

Ever had a check bounce because of a simple error? You're not alone - 1 in 5 people make at least one mistake when writing checks. Here are the most costly slip-ups to avoid:

Danger Zone: "Pay to the order of: Cash" (Anyone can cash this!)

Safe Alternative: Always write the full recipient name. If paying "ABC Plumbing", don't shorten to "ABC".

Pro Tip: Draw a line through empty spaces so no one can add extra digits to your amount.
